About Bibliotherapy Australia
Bibliotherapy Australia is a centre for reflective reading and heart-centred wellbeing practice. Through story, we invite people to connect more deeply with themselves and with others, offering a presence-led approach grounded in research, lived practice and compassionate listening.
This work has grown over two decades through community programs, professional training and pioneering research. People are often drawn here when they are seeking steadiness, reflection or a different way of meeting the stories they carry.
Whatever brings you here, you are welcome.
Our Approach
At the centre of this work is Heart-Centred Bibliotherapy, a presence-led approach that understands reading as relationship rather than prescription. It expands traditional bibliotherapy by placing presence, curiosity and heart intelligence at the centre of the reading experience. The approach grows from world-first doctoral research into the facilitator’s role and continues to influence practitioners across library, health, education and community settings.
Community, inclusion and the ripple effect
Bibliotherapy Australia is shaped by community. We believe story belongs to everyone—we honour diverse cultures, identities, abilities and ways of reading and being. Our programs are designed to be accessible and respectful.
Again and again, we see presence create ripples—within individuals, between people and then into community. We see insight emerge when people listen to story, to themselves and to one another.
Who we work with
We work alongside people and organisations who bring care, story and reflection into everyday life, including:
libraries
aged care and dementia programs
carers
educators
coaches
community services providers
wellbeing and social prescribing providers
creative and literary practitioners
counsellors, psychologists and health care providers
Bibliotherapy is used across a wide range of settings, from large organisations to small one-to-one practices. In each context, it offers a way of bringing companionship, reflection and connection into community life through story.

Where to begin
Whether you are drawn to read for your own reflection, to experience bibliotherapy in community, or to bring this work to others, there is a place to begin.
A different kind of care
Bibliotherapy Australia offers reflective reading experiences that are neither conventional therapy nor book clubs. This work is not about fixing, diagnosing or performing. It begins with you, meeting you wherever you are at.
We create spacious, welcoming environments where people are invited to pause, notice and explore what matters. Through story and reflection, readers often discover new language for their experience and a gentler way of seeing themselves and others.
No pressure to get it right.
No expectation to share more than feels comfortable.
Just an invitation to come as you are and meet story with presence.
Contemporary wellbeing research highlights the importance of connection, safety and belonging. Bibliotherapy nurtures these foundations through gentle reflective reading, offering a calm space for people to slow their pace, listen inwardly and feel quietly accompanied. It is a community-based, accessible way for individuals and communities to rediscover steadiness, insight and a sense of collective humanity.
However you arrive, may this work remind you that reading can be a quiet act of care, for yourself, for others and for the wider world.
