Inspiration for The Reading Way
The Reading Way carries something of the spirit of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. That work reminded me of the power of gentle rhythm and of returning again and again to a creative practice with openness and curiosity.
Where The Artist’s Way invites you to write morning pages, The Reading Way invites you to read reflectively. Both create space for discovery, insight and presence through small, steady steps.
And just as The Artist’s Way can be experienced in quiet togetherness, The Reading Way can also be experienced side by side or in quiet company with yourself.
This rhythm is simple:
• moving slowly and steadily
• valuing the companionship of story
• honouring the quiet work of showing up, even for a few minutes at a time
Like The Artist’s Way, The Reading Way is not about achieving an outcome. It is about deepening connection with words, with self, with others and with the world around you.
The Reflective Approach
Reflective reading does not happen by reading alone. It asks for a gentle kind of presence, a way of meeting story that is held rather than hurried.
Through small pauses, quiet attention and spacious moments, the meeting between reader and story can deepen in its own way. Reflection unfolds gradually, often through simple noticing, opening possibilities, softening certainties and offering new ways of seeing.
The Reading Way companions offer a quiet structure for this kind of reading, bringing together carefully chosen passages, an audio reflection and gentle invitations that encourage you to linger where something in the story meets something in you.
You are not asked to search for meaning or to work toward insight.
The guidance simply creates a space where insight can arise in its own time, held by by the steadiness of the reflective pathway.
The practice is to stay close to the words, allowing each passage to meet you where you are.
About the Response Pieces
The original stories and poems offered within The Reading Way are reflective companions, written in response to the literary works that inspire them.
They do not retell or reinterpret the original texts. They arise from a personal meeting with them, a way of listening, reflecting and exploring what the stories awaken in the heart.
Each response is an independent creative work, offered with deep respect and gratitude to the authors
whose writing continues to illuminate the human experience.
By offering these reflections, The Reading Way honours the living conversation between story and reader, and invites you to meet each work in your own way and in your own time.
About the Literary Pieces
Excerpts from stories and poems are included with gratitude for the purpose of reflection and quiet exploration. Every effort has been made to respect copyright through brief quotation, accurate attribution and encouraging readers to engage directly with the full work.
These companion works are created by Bibliotherapy Australia to offer a gentle guide for reflective reading. They are not affiliated with or endorsed by the authors or publishers.
Readers are warmly encouraged to purchase, borrow or listen to the original book to experience the work in its entirety.
